Bremen HS Students Celebrate Day of the Dead

Students celebrate Dia de Los Muertos with projects and activities throughout the school

Bremen High School’s World Language classes celebrated Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with several different projects and activities throughout the school. Students in Ms. Gina Arguelles, Ms. Carrie Diedrich, Ms. Kristen Kaczmarek, and Ms. Mayra Ortega’s classes learned about this historical holiday, which focuses on gathering with family and friends to celebrate people who have died. Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated by many Hispanic cultures throughout the world. Bremen students were able to partake in several historical traditions, including an ofrenda alter project, creating sugar skulls with a culinary arts class, painting their faces, and creating skeletons.

Students brought in candles and pictures of their loved ones who have passed and reflected and celebrated their lives instead of focusing on their deaths. Estefania Flores’s father brought in cempasuchils (marigolds, which are the flower of the dead) to decorate the alter and senior Maria Ledesma designed the alter and put it all together.

“The students really enjoyed the week long projects and got a chance to remember their fallen family members; I’m very proud of them for the work they put into making it a special week,” said World Language teacher Ms. Mayra Ortega.
