Bremen HS Students Participate in National Day of Silence

National school initiative aimed at improving school climate for all students

The Bremen High School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), in conjunction with the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, facilitated the annual Day of Silence on April 17. The Day of Silence’s purpose is to bring attention to anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying, harassment and effective responses while making schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. This national school initiative, a positive educational experience, is an opportunity for students to work toward improving school climate for all students. More than 220 Bremen students participated in the event and should be commended for their commitment to equality and social justice. This is freshmen Katelynn Slee’s first year participating in the Day of Silence, and she had this to say about her experience, “I feel that the Day of Silence is an inspirational day to show the respect for those who have kept their own silence in the LGBT community. It shows respect for those who have passed, taken their own lives, and those that are still living. I’m happy to be a part of this national day of recognition!”
