Bremen HS Students 'Rethink Their Drink'

Freshman health students study sugar content in popular drinks

Bremen High School health teacher Ms. Jennifer Swanson is challenging her health students to “Rethink Their Drink” as she educates them on sugar content in popular drinks. Students utilized hands-on labs to learn just how much sugar and calories are in some of their favorite beverages. Students looked at nutrition labels to measure out the teaspoons of sugar and calculate the calories in beverages. Students were shocked at the amount of sugar and calories that were in their favorite drinks! After the hands-on lab they discussed the harmful effect that sugar can have on bodies as well as overall health. Students then calculated how much water they should be drinking on a given day and were challenged to drink the required amount for three consecutive days and track improvements in their bodies. Many students realized that they slept better, felt fuller, and were more focused throughout the day.

Bremen High School Health Teacher Ms. Swanson said, “Students were surprised at the amount of sugar and calories in their favorite drinks. After the water challenge, many students said they will consider “rethinking their drink”.

Freshman student Valeria Vargas enjoyed the challenge, “I cannot believe how much sugar I am consuming on a daily basis! I would never drink these items if I knew what they contained; water is so much better for me! During the water challenge, I slept better and was more focused. I will definitely be rethinking my drink!”
