Bremen HS Students Visit the Mexican Fine Arts Museum

Students toured the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit

Bremen High School Spanish 3 Honors students recently made a trip to the Mexican Fine Arts Museum in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. The students went to the museum to tour the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibit. The museum has several permanent and temporary exhibits, but this particular Día de los Muertos exhibit makes an annual appearance to demonstrate to visitors how people of Mexican descent remember and honor loved ones that have passed on. The ofrendas (altars created to remember loved ones) range from very traditional to very modern. Very traditional ofrendas include items that represent each of the earth’s four elements of life: earth, wind, fire and water. Each ofrenda also includes items that the person used to enjoy during their time on earth. One student, Sadik Froukh, said “There was such a good variety of different types of altars.” It was great for everyone to be able to experience altars that are beyond the expected norm. While at the museum, students were able to take a guided tour of not only the Day of the Dead exhibit, but they were also able to view the new collection of sculptures by Luis Tapia, including representations of some controversial and/or current issues. Students enjoyed their time at the museum and were able to see a holiday celebrated by a culture other than their own.
