Bremen HS Students Visit NEIU
The visit was a valuable experience for the students, many of whom had never visited a college campus

Bremen High School Counseling Department recently sponsored a college visit to Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. BHS Counselors Kristine Bonebrake and Anna Rauch, along with Project Manager Shelli Lang, took 25 juniors and seniors to the college campus located on the north side of Chicago. After a brief welcome by Patricia Johnson, Admissions Counselor, students listened to a presentation by Faviola Kallas, Admissions Counselor, which highlighted the features of Northeastern Illinois University and the students’ roles in preparing to be prospective students. Students were then taken on a campus tour led by a NEIU senior student ambassador who informed the students what it is truly like to be a student on campus and who offered valuable and candid advice along the way. Finally, the group was given a tour of The Nest, the university’s residence hall which opened in fall of 2016. Located in the heart of their main campus, these apartment-style units come fully furnished with full-sized kitchens and utilities. After touring the decorated model apartment, BHS junior Paulina Renteria commented, “I could see myself living in a place like this!” The visit was a valuable experience for the students, many of whom had never visited a college campus. “The students left with a motivation to amp up their college and scholarship application process,” commented Mrs. Bonebrake, “And, we all want to move into one of those apartments!” For more information on the Bremen High School PPS offerings, contact Counselor Mrs. Bonebrake at Kbonebrake@bhsd228.com.
