Bremen HS Teachers Team Up to Prepare Lessons

Spanish and Culinary Arts teachers team up to prepare lessons celebrating Dia de Los Muertos

It’s not every day you see a Spanish and Culinary Arts teacher planning lessons together, but this is exactly what you would see if you watched Bremen High School’s Spanish teacher Mrs. Gina Arguelles and Culinary Arts teachers Mrs. Tanya Mack and Ms. Rachel Brinkman planning their lessons for Día de Los Muertos. The teachers teamed up to prepare for a lesson making sugar skulls, a traditional part of celebrating Día de Los Muertos. Day one focused on preparing students for working in the lab, instructions, rules, regulations, and how to utilize the tools they would be working with, as well as learning about the history and cultural importance of this holiday. Day two was teaming up making the skulls, and day three was decorating the handmade skulls, as well as taking part in a cultural celebration. The classes also drank hot chocolate and ate “pan de muerto” (special sweet roll that is eaten for this holiday). Student Jovari Brown said, “I loved the bread and making the sugar skulls was so much fun!” Mrs. Arguelles said, “I love working with the culinary arts classes because it helps brings this particular cultural lesson to life! (Kind of ironic since we are talking about death!)” Student Michael Lamotte said, “This project was interesting. We should do it again!”
