Bremen HS Teams Up with Erika's Lighthouse to Discuss Teen Depression
Erika's Lighthouse is a non-profit organization focused on depression awareness and suicide prevention

Bremen High School Social Workers Ms. Theresa Connelly and Mr. Ted Bailey, School Psychologists Mrs. Jennifer Castor, Ms. Kelly Eastman and Ms. Diamond Douglas, in conjunction with P.E. teachers Mrs. Jennifer Swanson and Ms. Katie Kelley, have teamed up for a two-day presentation in all BHS freshmen Heath classes entitled, "Teen Depression: Stories of Hope & Health." This marks the third year of District 228's collaboration with Erika's Lighthouse, a non-profit organization focused on depression awareness and suicide prevention.
Through discussion and small group activities students learn about the signs and symptoms of depression, treatment options, how to help themselves or others who may be struggling with depression, and how stigma can discourage people from seeking help for mental illness. Additionally, students completed a confidential "self-referral" card at the end of each presentation, which gave them the opportunity to receive follow up care from Bremen’s PPS staff.
