Each month Bremen High School honors several students as “Someone You Should Know.” Students are recognized for doing great things at Bremen High School or in the community. “This is a great opportunity for our teachers and staff to showcase students and thank them for making a positive difference within our school and community. In addition, it allows us to maintain the focus that we are student centered at Bremen High School,” said Principal Dave Kibelkis.
One of the October Someone You Should Know students is Freshmen Felix Gonzalez. His nomination came from Bremen’s Math teacher Mr. William Flood. Mr. Flood reports that not only is Felix a hard-working, dedicated, disciplined, polite and respectful student, he is also a boxer! Felix has been boxing since he was nine years old and trains three to six days per week for three hours each day. Felix has won several state, regional, and national championships in his divisions. Felix trains at the Chicago Youth Boxing Club and his ultimate goal is to make the 2020 Olympic Team.
The next Someone You Should Know is a group that has broken new ground at Bremen High School - the iTech Team! The iTech Team was nominated by Bremen Media Specialists Ms. Kelly Sala and Ms. Mary Rose Bernas. The iTech Team is a student group who works with the IMC staff daily to assist students with iPad issues. Their duties include setting up iPads, creating new Apple IDs, connecting keyboards, problem solving WiFi issues, sharing tips and tricks with students and staff and delivering lost, restored and repaired iPads. One critical duty they have started to perform is calling Apple Care Support with warranty issues. “As we expand and define this role together, they have eagerly taken on new duties and have worked diligently to help everyone in a timely fashion. They are invaluable, and we are grateful every day to be able to defer to them,” said Ms. Bernas.

She has been practicing Tae Kwon Do since the age of seven and is currently a member of the USA Team. She is a 1st-degree black belt and trains two hours a day Monday through Friday and four hours on Saturdays. According to her math teacher, Mrs. Ashley Thompson, “She is a very hard-working student. She volunteers in class discussions and helps peers after completing her own work. She is a pleasure to have in class!”
The final recipient of the October Someone You Should Know honor is junior Clinton Thurmond. Clinton is reported to be a natural leader at Bremen High School. His English teacher Mr. Michael Cline, nominated him because of his leadership skills and commitment to being a positive influence on his peers.
