Churchill Orchards Donates Apples to Bremen HS
Orchard helps provide a healthy breakfast for students

Before this year, students that skipped breakfast had very few healthy options at Bremen High School to get them going in the morning. However, one student club and a teacher saw the need and responded by selling healthy snacks. “I wasn’t sure how successful selling fruit and water would be since we were competing with candy and chips, but I must say, I am so proud of the students at Bremen High School, they are just as excited as I am about the healthy options!” exclaimed teacher and Interact sponsor Mrs. Gina Arguelles.
Mrs. Arguelles, along with her Interact Club students, decided to offer a piece of fruit and a bottle of water for just one dollar. The fruit varies depending on what looks fresh the night before when Arguelles shops for the snacks, but lately they’ve focused on apples since they are in season and received a generous donation!
This is where Mike Churchill comes into play. While shopping at the local Tinley Park farmers market with her family, Arguelles started talking to Churchill about her initiative. She was asking him which apples were delicious but wouldn’t cost too much. Churchill, owner of a family operated orchard in Coloma, Michigan, generously offered to donate fresh picked apples to Bremen High School. Churchill Orchards is about an hour and a half from Bremen High School, the distance didn’t stop Churchill from making a donation.

“I was blown away at Churchill’s generosity! I was talking to him about the apples and asking for advice and he chose to give us the apples for free! It was like a dream! I’m so grateful for Mike and his family and for their generosity towards our students,” said Arguelles.
The money that Interact Club is raising is goes to buy more fruit and water for the students at Bremen High School. Once they break even, the students will then vote on a nonprofit organization to send the money to.
