Community Rallies to Provide Breakfast for Bremen Students

Breakfast program ran through donations provides a meal to in-need high school students

When Bremen High School students began approaching Bremen Social Worker and Homeless Liaison Theresa Connelly asking for breakfast, she immediately reached out to Bremen staff asking for assistance and potential donations. Amazed at the kindness of Bremen staff members, Connelly received enough donations to provide breakfast to in-need students for the entire first semester.

However, as a result, Connelly began to realize that the extent of students who don’t have the opportunity to eat breakfast every day was larger than she originally thought. With the awareness of her ability to provide students breakfast, Connelly began receiving more referrals from staff members about potential students who were in need of a morning meal.

Connelly then decided to take things a step further and posted to her personal Facebook page asking for additional donations from family and friends for the second semester. From there, a friend shared her post in multiple community Facebook group pages where a former Bremen High School student saw the post and too began reaching out. Word spread around the community and since then, donations have been flooding in.

Currently, Connelly’s own office is stocked with breakfast items as well as multiple cabinets in a spare storage room. Connelly says she has also received $1,200 in generous monetary donations for food items. The most heartwarming part for Connelly are the several letters she has received with donations from current Bremen families, Bremen graduates, and parents whose children graduated from the school.
