Converters Stolen From 3 Cars on 1 Day in Same Lot

The Oak Forest Metra station parking lot was the site of 3 catalytic converter thefts Dec. 17, according to police.

Three cars parked at the Oak Forest Metra station were stripped of their catalytic converters on the same day, according to police reports.

The thefts occurred between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Dec. 17, in the station's parking lot off of 159th Street on Oak Road, the Oak Forest police report stated. The car models that were targeted included a Pontiac Grand Am and two Chevrolet Malibus, the report added.

One victim told police that it cost $828.11 to replace the stolen converter and repair damage to the car, the report stated.

Thieves will snatch catalytic converters for their resale value and for the valuable metals used in their construction, such as gold, copper, palladium, platinum and rhodium.

An experienced thief can remove a converter from a parked in just about three minutes, according to AOL Autos.
