D228 Students Participate in United Way's 'April Food Day'
Students from Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest and Oak Forest High Schools volunteered their time to support the United Way's "April Food Day"
On Wednesday, April 25 students from Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest and Oak Forest High Schools volunteered their time to support the United Way’s “April Food Day” at the Tinley Park Convention Center. Non-perishable items were delivered to the Convention Center from approximately 20 area collection sites. Along with participation from their own schools, the District 228 students helped to unload and organize the many donations received.
“While there is no community service requirement for District 228 students to graduate, it is common knowledge in our school community that D228 students have big hearts when it comes to helping and supporting their fellow students and communities. This United Way 2018 Food Drive was proof of that and provided a great opportunity for our students to share their passion for helping others.” said D228 Superintendent Bill Kendall.
According to a letter received from United Way, with nearly 25% of Cook County's school age children having a need for support, food drives have become a crucial resource for many students. Those families rely on food that comes from local food pantries to feed their families. The United Way's Food Drive provides a significant support for local food pantries and community support is essential.
