District 228 Welcomes New National Honor Society Inductees

Bremen High School District 228 schools welcomed 212 students into the National Honor Society at the end of October. Typically, new honor society inductees would be welcomed with a traditional award ceremony at the school where parents and family members would be welcomed to help celebrate the student’s achievement. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic still at large, staff had to get creative with how they would celebrate the achievement of their students.

The idea came from Oak Forest High School National Honor Society sponsor, Mrs. Kelly Henry who thought it would be nice to celebrate the students by dropping off yard-signs at student’s homes. In the summer, District 228 similarly distributed yard-signs to the Class of 2020 who had to miss out on their traditional graduation ceremonies. It seemed, that the yards were appreciated and a proud display for students and families so why not do something similar for the new inductees? Henry then shared the idea with National Honor Society sponsors at the other District 228 schools. Tinley Park High School sponsor Dori Neven was quick to say yes to the idea as well as Hillcrest High School sponsor Lindsay Lopez.

Lopez even took things one step further and asked staff and students to participate in a National Honor Society parade. Staff and students showed up at the school to decorate their cars and participate in the celebration.

While Bremen High School did not participate in the National Honor Society celebrations, the school plans to do something similar in the winter as Bremen typically hosts its induction ceremony later in the year as opposed to the other District 228 schools.
