How Safe are Illinois' Public Universities?

Here are the 2013 crime statistics for the state's public colleges.

A college campus is a place you ought to feel safe, and while Illinois public universities typically are for students, heinous and violent crimes still happen, especially to young women.

The Clery Act – a federal law that requires colleges and universities throughout the country to publish annual security reports by Oct. 1 of each year – was enacted in 1991 and later renamed after Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old woman who was raped and murdered in her Lehigh University dorm room in 1986.

While you can find the full reports on the websites of all 12 Illinois public universities, we’ve tallied up the number of offenses that fall into the violent crimes category – i.e., forcible sexual offenses, robbery and aggravated assault, along with total student enrollment last fall.
