Illinois Towns with the Worst- and Best-Funded Police and Fire Pension Funds

You could get the bill for your towns' police and fire pensions' debt.

As the Illinois Supreme Court prepares to hear opening oral arguments for Senate Bill 1, the pension reform law passed in December 2013, towns across the state are facing their own fiscal emergencies because of underfunded public safety pension systems.

Dozens of local police and fire pension funds are on the verge of collapse, and the amounts for which cities are on the hook will devastate municipal budgets. An 80 percent funded ratio generally is considered “healthy,” though only a handful of funds maintain that status.

Here are the towns with the worst-funded police and firefighter pension systems, as well as local governments that are in the best shape, according to a new analysis by the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability.
