Illness Causes Absence of Several Fierke Students

A "greater than average" number of students have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms, principal says.

OAK FOREST, IL - Several students at the Fierke Education Center in Oak Forest have been absent in recent days, many due to similar severe symptoms.

"There has been a greater than average number of students absent with gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting," Fierke Principal Bret Pignatiello wrote in a memo to families on Wednesday. "Symptoms reported have been vomiting, diarrhea and fever greater than 100 degrees fahrenheit."

Pignatiello says the school has taken "extra measures to help sterilize the building."

"Additional staff has been deployed to help ensure that we go above and beyond daily cleanliness and disinfecting standards," he said.

Fierke is located at 6535 Victoria Dr. in Oak Forest and is part of the Tinley Park Community Consolidated School District 146.
