Delays to Metra's Rock Island Line Expected During Track Improvements

Plan ahead, commuters. Construction schedule in effect August 17.

Metra commuters should expect delays next week as a railroad tie replacement and track resurfacing project begins.

A construction schedule will be in effect from Aug. 17 through Oct. 25 for midday and weekend trains on the Rock Island Line, as crews replace 17,500 ties and resurface track over a nearly 25-mile stretch between Blue Island and Joliet, according to a release from Metra. The construction schedule is available online here.

Due to the nature of the project, some rush hour trains may also experience delays due to slower operating speeds in work zones. Riders are encouraged to review the construction schedule for more detailed information on the trains impacted by the project.

Crews will work seven days a week, with most of the work occurring between the weekday morning and evening rush hours to minimize impact to passenger service.

β€œThis project is a part of the regular maintenance necessary to keep our rail lines in the best condition possible. Tracks and ties are the foundation of the railroad and must be maintained or replaced on a regular basis,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. β€œWhile no one enjoys passing through a construction zone, riders will ultimately enjoy the benefits of a smoother ride and more reliable service.”

Communities along the route should be aware that they will also be impacted by noise associated with the construction equipment as well as the need for trains passing through the construction area to sound their horns to alert the work crews.
