Oak Forest HS Baking Basics Students Take 3rd Place in Cupcake Wars

Their chocolate espresso cupcake had cream cheese and raspberry filling

Oak Forest High School Baking Basics students Britney Archibald, Alaya Arambula, Brianna McAuliffe, and Paige Ignatowicz show off their award winning cupcakes. The team competed last week in District 228 Cupcake Wars and came out the delicious 3rd Place champions of cupcakes.

The group competed in the Cupcake Wars with a cream cheese and raspberry filled chocolate espresso cupcake, topped with delicious caramel buttercream icing. The icing was colored green in line with the theme of the competition, which was “Earth Day.” The purpose of the contest was to bring the curriculum to life in a real life setting. Junior Britney Archibald said, “Our chocolate cupcakes were made from scratch.” Senior Paige Ignatowicz added, “To fill the cupcake, we cut out the top, filled it and re-topped it.” Junior Alaya Arambula described the decorations. “On top of the green icing which we used as if it were grass, we decorated our cupcakes with a pretzel winged butterfly with an M&M body and licorice antenna.” Archibald said, “The pretzels were dipped in milk chocolate.”

Oak Forest High School Baking Basics teacher Vicky Vogel said that the judge was very impressed with the lightness and airiness of the cupcake. According to Vogel, the judge said that they were perfectly mixed. Vogel was very pleased with her team. “They came together in three weeks. They were lovely students. Each student had a different part of the cupcake recipe and did it well.”
