Oak Forest HS Cheerleaders Volunteer at Cancer Walk

Cheerleaders cheer on walkers at the Orland Park Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Oak Forest High School Cheerleaders cheered cancer survivors and supporters to victory at the Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk, held in Orland Park. This is the seventh year that Oak Forest High School Varsity Cheerleaders have been invited to participate as special volunteers in this event. Oak Forest High School Cheerleading Coach Ms. Christine DiVenti said, “We attend the opening ceremony and start the day off with a short performance.” After their performance, the cheerleaders headed to the beginning of the walk where they “cheered” on the walkers with cheers and chants of “FIGHT WALKERS FIGHT, F-I-G-H-T fight for Life” and more.

Oak Forest High School Senior Denise Arenas said, “It was amazing seeing all the people there to support one cause.”

“I liked how when we cheered people on, people appreciated us cheering them. One man had been there lots of times and said it was nice to see us cheering them on. It was fun and heartwarming to participate [in this event],” said Oak Forest High School Junior Erin Moore.

Each year the Oak Forest High School Cheerleaders dedicate their day at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk to a family member they know that has been forever changed by this disease. This year, one of the cheerleader’s grandmothers and the JV coach’s sister are fighting breast cancer, and so the cheerleader’s participation in the event was dedicated to those brave ladies.

Coach DiVenti said, “I can tell you that this year we heard so many ‘thank-yous’ from repeat walkers saying how they appreciate that the OFHS cheerleaders are there every year to cheer on and support the “hero’s”, survivors and loved ones lost. It is a very moving and special day seeing so many survivors, family and friends walking to help find a cure. I know I always leave with a very full heart.”

Arenas agreed with her coach. “This is the third time I’ve participated in this event,” she said. “I like to show support. This is something to look forward to.”
