Oak Forest HS FCCLA Class Attends 'Stop the Violence' Seminar
Guest speakers covered topics such as domestic violence and gang violence

The FCCLA class attended a “Stop the Violence” Seminar recently. The seminar focused on three different types of violence that a student might see in or around their homes, according to FCCLA teacher Kristina Blair.
Students heard from speakers that have dealt with violence in one way or another. Guest speaker Susan Brauner was a victim of domestic violence and spoke to the students on that subject. Guest speakers Otis Lane and Maurice Johnson were involved in gang violence spoke about those types of violence. Officer Ryan Gulli, a Midlothian police officer, also spoke about his brushes with different types of violence in his work as law enforcement. Senior Alex Bozek thought it was remarkable that the gang violence speakers Lane and Johnson said that the streets of Chicago today aren’t like they used to be. He said, “Back in the day, you wouldn’t hear about a young kid getting shot. Today, a 9 year old kid recently died and it was blamed on gang violence. This is where the stereotype of gang violence is coming from.”
After absorbing the four speakers’ messages, FCCLA students created posters about what “Stop the Violence” meant to them. Participants included: Tiffani Alexander, Alex Bozek, Alex Cardenas, Kyra Collins, Keshara Davis, Jessica Delesio, Salvador Flores, Christasia Fountain, Paul Gacek, Joseph Hernandez, Brittany McManigal, Megan Nadeau, Demeri Pajic, Josie Pondel, Ashley Rintz, Khayla Roberts, Heidi Schwertfeger, Kaylee Showers, Emma Skoubas, Michelle Spreadbury, Alyssa Stephany, Micayla Stramaglia, Alexandria Tseung, Phillip Wroda, Anastasia Zubek, Roia Allan, Kirsten Arriz, Briana Atkins, Jenna Beardsley, Samantha Boyer, Vanessa Cabrera, Madison Dabaco, Bailey Dotto, Isaiah Duitmann, Hannah Fischer, Tala Hammad, Aya Hasan, Bryan Havorka, Elizabeth Lampasona, Kayla Livingston, Paige Manso, Lauren McKernin, Jacquelyn Mezera, Erin Moore, Eric Niewinski, Caitlyn Nordstrom, Sarah O’Keefe, Charlotte Peloquin, Elizabeth Ramirez, Ashley Siedschlag, Clarissa Wolf, and Megan Zarate.
