Oak Forest HS FCCLA Students Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children

Students helped pack food that will ship to nearly 70 countries around the world

Oak Forest High School students Deminique Enrique, Hannah Edwards and Kayla James pause during their hard work to display the good food they are packing during the FCCLA volunteer event at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg.

The FCCLA students volunteered their time to help pack food for hungry children around the world. Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization committed to feeding the world’s children. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children, and they ship these meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.

The food that the students packed was simple food, but really filling. They packed rice, protein, vegetables and soy. The FCCLA students tasted it and said it tasted like salty fried rice.

They learned quite a lot on their trip. Kayla James said, “A lot of people can make a big difference.” Karlee Knudson agreed with Kayla. She said, “We were able to feed 69 kids for a year.” This number was only based on the number of containers they packed during their two hour volunteer segment. James said, “It was fun [at Feed My Starving Children]. They play music and you have to make a cheer when you are done [packing your containers]. Our cheer was ‘JoWhat? Djibouti!’ because our food was being packed to be sent to the African country of Djibouti.” Knudson said, “I would love to do it again. We could organize ourselves to go by visiting their website feedmystarvingchildren.org.”

Students who contributed to this effort are Bushura Aminu, Elizabeth Arriaga, Jaime Barrera, Ava Bewley, Samantha Colunga, Diamond Cooks, Hannah Edwards, Deminique Enriquez, Destiny Harris, Mia Herrera, Brianna Hunt, Kayla James, Jessica Janecyk, Karlee Knudson, Sabrina Madrid, Yahaira Morales, Kailee Papendik, Desiree Rodriguez, Yuridia Rodriguez, Qamar Saleh, Amanda Sanchez, Christopher Smith, Marion Smith, Mikayla Smith, and Mrs. Kristina Blair, FCCLA Teacher.
