Oak Forest HS Kama Literary Magazine Turns the Page for Our Vets
The students organized a book drive for the Hines VA Food Pantry

Oak Forest High School Kama Lit Magazine students Michelle Madej, Christina Hanson, Alexandria Nielsen, Niamh Haran, Christina Majercak, and Josh Bruno (not pictured) organized a book drive for the Hines VA Food Pantry. Many of the veterans that come to the pantry are homeless or living in group homes, and do not have access to reading materials. The club had a goal of getting 200 books and magazines donated so that each vet that came to the pantry could take one home with them. According to Oak Forest Kama Lit Magazine Sponsor Lauren Brazel, “Not only did we meet our goal of 200 books, but we exceeded it and had 383 books, magazines and newspapers to hand out. Not only did each of the 137 vets served that day get a book, but the remaining media was able to be donated to the hospital, VA retirement home, and VA hospice care to be handed out to other vets.” The club members were able to not only hand the books out, but helped with setting up the food pantry, packaging up items for the vets, and being able to socialize with some of our nation’s heroes. On average, the pantry services 150-200 vets each Thursday that it is open. Many veterans expressed their appreciation for the students’ help and want them to come back again next year!
