Oak Forest High School students Lorainna Castillo and Destiny Harris carefully poured Gatorade into their ice cream sundae glass recently as they were working on a lab in their science class with teacher Gina West. The purpose of the class was to find the density of different liquids.
Students had to find which liquid was the densest out of the following: Gatorade, grenadine, and Diet 7-Up. Then they were to pour the densest liquid into an ice cream sundae glass, followed by the second densest next and then the least dense liquid on top. If done correctly, each liquid layer would have maintained its own layer and would not have mixed in with the other layers.
Samantha McFalls and her partner Erika Rafael found that Grenadine was the densest, which is why they poured it in first. According to their calculations, Diet 7-Up was the second densest layer and the Gatorade layer was the least dense layer on the top. Why is the grenadine layer the densest? McFalls said, “There’s more carbon in grenadine, which makes it heavier.”

At the end of the lab, the students were able to enjoy the labors of their work and drink the sodas they made.
