Oak Forest HS Students Attend 'The Magic Flute'

Students attend performance at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre

The Oak Forest High School Academic and Talented students traveled to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre’s Skyline Theatre last week in order to see Mozart’s opera, “The Magic Flute.”

The opera was performed by the South African troupe, the Isango Ensemble. This performance was an Olivier Award winning performance that effortlessly relocated Mozart’s magical, mysterious kingdom to a contemporary township. It was a delight to see the African dance interwoven throughout the production. Also, the main music was created on the marimba and all of the cast members played the music for the production.

Students were amazed at the quality of the production. Oak Forest High School Sophomore Ortensia Ontiveros said, “I thought you were awesome!” to the various ensemble cast members when they came out to answer questions after the show. Ensemble members said they had been performing this show for many years and felt like it was a good reconciliation piece because good triumphs over bad. One of the challenging things about the show, they said, was to learn how to play the musical instruments.
