Oak Forest HS Students Complete Stewards of Children Training
After their training, students made blankets for a domestic abuse center

Oak Forest High School Junior Child Care II students Amanda Seeber and Laney Barrett work with their teacher Mr. Mark Furstenau on making a cheerful blanket featuring cookies for the South Suburbia Crisis Center in conjunction with Stewards of Children Training given by Advocate Childhood Training Treatment program. The Stewards of Children Training program trained the students in sexual abuse prevention. Child Care II students from all four District 228 high schools received a certificate for participating in training for the Stewards of Children Training program. In the session, students were trained to recognize signs of abuse, how to be a mandated reporter, and what warning signs of abuse are. Students learned about the threat of sexual abuse in children and how to minimize the opportunity of potential sexual abuse by minimizing one child/adult situations. Students learned that children need to talk openly about abuse and how to stay alert to the potential signs of abuse which can be emotional, physical, or verbal. Students learned who to contact in situations of abuse and how to act on their suspicions. After the training, students made blankets for a domestic abuse center. District 228 Child Care II teachers Mark Furstenau (Oak Forest HS), Kim Flannigan (Bremen HS), Alicia Sink (Hillcrest HS), Ashley Meyers (Tinley Park HS), and District 228 Supervisor April Nykaza participated in the training.
