Oak Forest HS Teachers Wear Many Hats

To promote career awareness, pictures of teachers were displayed showing jobs they had prior to teaching

Oak Forest High School Junior Jajuanna Marks studies the display “Teachers Wear Many Hats” and looks at the jobs teachers have had in addition to their teaching career. The display is the brainchild of Oak Forest High School PPS Department Career Readiness Committee Megan Couture and Jennifer Ambrose. Ms. Ambrose said, “We decided we needed to promote career awareness. To do that, we wanted to let students know that many people have had many careers in their past.” Pictures of teachers were displayed under different career bands: human services, agriculture/food, architecture/construction, business management, education/training, finance, government/public administration, health science, public safety/corrections, manufacturing, marketing, science/engineering, and transportation/logistics. Ms. Couture involved the OFHS teachers by asking what jobs they have had. This is so that students would have a wider knowledge of careers and what careers are available to them. This dovetails nicely into the Career Cruising lessons that are taught through the developmental guidance lessons at OFHS. In the developmental guidance lessons, freshmen learn “who am I?”, sophomores learn “where am I going?” and juniors learn “how do I get there?” Getting students exposed to teachers who have had many different careers on their way to education is a benefit to the ongoing lesson schedule. This display also subtly advertises for Career Day which is held at OFHS in May. This is a special day at Oak Forest High School in which freshmen through juniors are exposed to different career speakers.
