UPDATE: Man in Custody after Stolen SUV Crashes into Utility Pole

The car was stolen from a woman in Markham, and the driver led police on a chase before hitting the pole, flipping the car, and fleeing.

Police have apprehended a man matching the description of a driver who crashed a stolen SUV into a utility pole in Oak Forest early Thursday morning.

The man matched the description of the driver: a 40-year-old man, in a white T-shirt and black pants, ABC7 reports.

Oak Forest police are looking for a driver who fled the scene after crashing a stolen SUV into a utility pole early Thursday morning in Oak Forest.

Witnesses said the driver may have been speeding up to 90 or 100 mph when it slammed into the utility pole near 156th and Cicero Avenue around 2:30 a.m.

The overturned car was found empty when police arrived.

A chase preceded the crash, after a woman in Markham reported that her car had been stolen, NBC reports. Alsip police spotted the car and curbed it, but the driver sped off. Officers tailed it to 127th and Cicero Avenue before stopping the chase.

Power was cut off for about 1,600 people, but was restored shortly afterward. Police were still looking for the driver later in the morning and were seen going through yards with weapons drawn.
