Oak Forest Preschool Students Experience Farm Life

Preschoolers get to hold baby chicks and ducks

Oak Forest High School student Emily Keegan gives a preschool student a baby chick to hold during the OFHS preschool Farm Week. Keegan borrowed baby chickens and baby ducks from The Children’s Farm in Palos Park, where she has volunteered for five years. “Since it’s spring, we always hatch baby chicks. These chicks were hatched last Sunday and the ducks were hatched last Tuesday,” stated Keegan. The ducklings were noticeably bigger than the chicks and were easier for the preschool children to hold. Holding the baby chicks and ducklings provides a sensory experience for the preschool children. It is a different type of animal than they would normally pet through their interactions at home with a dog, rabbit or cat.
