Robbins Flooding Could Be Eased With Mixed-Use Development
The Regional Transit Authority is considering a project to build a mixed-use neighborhood near the Metra station in Robbins.

ROBBINS, IL -- A mixed-use development could be used to alleviate the flooding problem that's been a crutch in the village of Robbins for decades if the Regional Transit Authority plans to move forward with a proposed project near the Robbins Metra station. The possibility was selected as one of nine to be considered by the RTA, which has opened a public comment period on the matter.
The RTA selected the Robbins project and eight others from 14 applications received during a "call for projects" in May and June. Public comments on the project will be accepted through Sept. 30 through email at applications@rtachicago.org.
The project description from the RTA indicates it will work with the Chicago Metoropolitan Agency for Planning on receiving recommendations for the use of about 140 acres of land near the Metra station to be developed. Robbins "envisions a mixed-use neighborhood on this land nearest the Metra station as well as a park and open space to the north."

Having a development in close proximity to the Metra station will "serve as a major draw to attract new residents creating demand for greater retail options and other interest in the area."
Final selections on which projects the RTA will approve will be made in October. The organization is also considering projects proposed in Winthrop Harbor, Bartlett, Maywood, South Side of Chicago, Mundelein, Schiller Park, Brookfield and Cicero.
