SD 228 Business Teachers Attend Economics & Financial Literacy Conference
In preparation for new Personal Finance course, teachers attend conference at the Federal Reserve Bank
Several Business Technology teachers from Bremen District 228 attended the 7th Annual Teaching Economics and Financial Literacy Conference, held at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. The conference supplied teachers with tools and resources enabling them to prepare students to be effective participants in the economy. “We had a great day,” said Bremen business teacher Amber Guzak. “We were given many free resources and learned about several sites and contests that will not only challenge our students, but also allow them to practice the newly learned skills in a real-world type setting. I’m looking forward to incorporating these resources into the new curriculum and believe our students will benefit immensely.”
Personal Finance is one of several new courses being offered by Bremen High School District 228’s Business Technology Department in the 2015-2016 school year. The hope of incorporating Personal Finance is to instill all students with the ability to plan thoughtfully regarding their needs and wants, and will be part of the district’s revamped set of graduation requirements. Students will be taught how to manage expenses of college without incurring burdensome debt, as well as planning for retirement.
“I am looking forward to offering Personal Finance. My teachers have been working hard on the curriculum and are excited for the opportunity to open the eyes of our students to the common sense strategies that can be employed to maintain a lifestyle that is comfortable and unburdened,” said Mr. Dwayne Mentgen, Business Technology District Supervisor.
