SD228 Hosts Third Annual STEM Competition

Students competed in seven events from mousetrap cars to trebuchets

Bremen High School District 228’s Science and Industrial Technology students have been working hard to prepare for the third annual 228 STEM Competition (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The science and industrial technology students at all four District 228 high schools (Bremen, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, and Tinley Park) met at Tinley Park High School. Students competed in seven events that ranged from mousetrap cars, CO2 cars, rockets, catapults, wind turbines to trebuchets. 228 Science Department Supervisor Mr. Steve Granat said, “The goal of this day was to have the students not only learn the content, but also to be able to apply what they’ve learned using the latest science and engineering practices, all while meeting new students from the other schools that have the same interests as them.”

In addition to the competition, this year students were able to take a field trip to Panduit’s research and development location where they were able to observe STEM in the work place first-hand.

“We were happy to announce that each of the four schools were able to finish in First Place for at least one of the competitions!” said Granat. The overall First Place winners are as follows: Trebuchet Accuracy - Robert Ashcraft and Lamonte Wallace (Bremen); Trebuchet Distance - Martin Jucik and Ronald Skala (Bremen); Mousetrap Car Distance - Raqueeb Yarrow (Hillcrest); CO2 Cars - Anthony Stein-Rojas (Oak Forest); Rockets - Justin Idrovo (Tinley Park); Wind Turbine Voltage - Kassidy VanMerkstyn and Jessica Weglarz (Tinley Park); and Mousetrap Catapult Distance - Marquice Waterford and Tyasia Small (Hillcrest).
