South Suburban College Students Take it to Springfield

A group of advocates took their passion for education reform to the state capitol last month.

South Suburban College students and staff members recently convened downstate in the name of education reform and opportunity.

A group of 17 SSC students and faculty traveled April 20 to Springfield for both Student Advocacy Day and the Rally 4 Education initiative. College President Don Manning was among the trailblazers, who sought to shed light on the budgetary crisis facing many Illinois universities and colleges currently impacted by operational funding limits.

Students and speakers' legislator audience included State Senator Napoleon Harris (D-15). Meaningful dialogue took place and the students were given an opportunity to have a question-and-answer session. The group was also introduced in the Illinois State General Assembly session and recognized by State Representative Al Riley (39th District), State Representative Marcus Evans (33rd District), and State Representative Thaddeus Jones (29th District).

With the budget stalemate still occurring, SSC was joined by thousands of others as they made their voices heard concerning their disapproval of lack of State funding for higher education institutions, particularly Illinois community colleges who serve 65 percent of those attending higher education institutions. This equates to 850,000 students per year and 9 out of 10 community college graduates work, pay taxes, and raise their families in Illinois.
