Sustained Silent Reading at Bremen HS

SSR fosters reading for enjoyment

Silent sustained reading, also known as SSR, is a term that many elementary and middle school students are familiar with. However, at Bremen High School, several English teachers still practices SSR with their high school students.

“It’s a reading program that we use in our classrooms to foster reading for enjoyment. Students read something they choose without even realizing they are increasing fluency, vocabulary, and focus,” said Bremen High School English Teacher Sarah Bogard.

“In hopes of bringing excitement to SSR and to make the students realize that most adults enjoy reading, I open my doors and invite other teachers, staff members, and administrators into my room to read with my students. We have an amazing impact on how students perceive reading, and I love being able to model it in a positive manner!” Bogard explains.

Ms. Kelly Sala, Media Specialist at Bremen High School, was one of the guest SSR readers this month. Sala chose to share a book with the students about bullying and the impact the bullying has on the bullied child, the bullies, and the bystanders. “This time around I chose to stay with the October bullying awareness theme. I love the chance to share SSR with Mrs. Bogard’s classes! I try to bring books the students will enjoy.”
