Passenger Who Died In Oak Lawn Crash ID'd, 2 Drivers In Custody: COPS

OAK LAWN, IL — A Calumet Park woman was killed in a four-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Oak Lawn. Two drivers are in custody and currently under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol, Oak Lawn police said. Charges are pending.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the woman as Anita Chacon, 66, who a passenger in a Lincoln that involved three other vehicles in the horrific crash hear 110th Street and Cicero Avenue. She was a passenger in the Lincoln that was traveling south on Cicero Avenue around early Sunday morning, when the Lincoln was hit from the rear by a Dodge Charger. The impact forced the Lincoln into the northbound lane of traffic, where it was hit head on by the Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Investigators say the Charger and Accord were both traveling south on Cicero at high rates of speed around 1:50 a.m. After the Charger hit the Lincoln, it came to a stop near 110th Street and Cicero Avenue. The speeding Accord left the roadway near 109th Street and Cicero Avenue, where it plowed into a bench, causing it to roll over numerous times before coming to a stop in a parking lot at 110th and Cicero, police said.

The driver of the Lincoln was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. The woman driving the Ram pick-up was also taken to Christ Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the two male passengers riding with her were uninjured.

The driver of the Honda Accord was transported to Christ Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge Charger was taken into custody at the scene. Both drivers are currently under investigation for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Cicero Avenue was still shut down Sunday morning in all directions from 105th Street to 111th Street. Mangled vehicles were still on the scene, along with a block-long debris field. The Oak Lawn Police Traffic Division and Illinois State Police were on the scene investigating the crash.

The names of the two drivers currently in custody will not be released until formally charged.
