2 Arrested After 90mph Chase In Stolen Car: Police

Hometown woman said her friend told her to flee cops because car was stolen in chase that passed through four suburbs, prosecutor said.

SUMMIT, IL — A Hometown woman and her male companion led police on a high-speed chase through Summit and Bedford Park in a car that had been reported stolen in Justice, prosecutors said. Mollie Serna, 26, appeared Wednesday before Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy on felony charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Serna’s friend, 28-year-old Javier Ramirez, or Oak Lawn, had a hearing Thursday before Judge Peter Felice, on a felony charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

While on patrol Dec. 17, a Summit police officer saw a Nissan chasing a pedestrian in the 6000 block of Archer Avenue. When officers tried to the Nissan, they said the driver, later identified as Serna, fled. The prosecutor said Serna drove recklessly in oncoming traffic through Bedford Park and Bridgeview, at times reaching speeds of 90mph. During the chase, officers said Ramirez threw a bottle out the window that hit a police vehicle. The Nissan was eventually stopped in the 7800 block South Harlem Avenue in Bridgeview.

Serna claimed that Ramirez told her not to stop for police because the vehicle was stolen, the police said. Earlier in the day, the prosecutor said that surveillance video captured Ramirez entering a 2014 Nissan at a Citgo station in Justice and driving away.

Serna was released by Judge Kennedy on a $10,000 I-bond. Serna’s next court date is Jan. 15.
