BEDFORD PARK, IL — A Markham woman arrested for shoplifting told the judge she wanted to go to jail so she could get drug treatment. Maegan Bodie, 29, appeared before Cook County Judge John Mahoney on a retail theft charge. Bodie also had five outstanding warrants from DuPage and Lake Counties in Illinois, as well as Indiana, for which she is being held without bond pending court appearances, prosecutors said.

Bodie was spotted allegedly shoplifting $68 worth of clothing June 24 from the Walmart Supercenter in Bedford Park. The prosecutor said she has four felony convictions for retail theft and possession of a controlled substance. She also has seven misdemeanor arrests and failed to show up to court 13 times.

"You have about the worse the background I’ve seen in someone so young," Mahoney said. "You’re not getting out."

The assistant public defender told the judge that Bodie was looking for "accessibility" to drug treatment in jail.

"They have treatment at [Cook County Jail] that they don't have at the others," Bodie said.

The judge set bail at $10,000. Bodie is due back in court July 19 in Bridgeview.
