Advocate Christ EMS Academy Hosts Info Session For EMT Course

Advocate Christ EMS Academy offers an overview of the basic EMT course for prospective students Thursday, Dec. 5. Classes start in 2020.

OAK LAWN, IL — If you’re looking for a career as a first responder, Advocate Christ Medical Center is hosting an informational meeting about its upcoming emergency medical technician (EMT) spring training course that starts next month. The informational meeting starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Advocate’s EMS Academy, 5220 W. 105th St., Oak Lawn, where classes will also be held.

The semester-long EMT course is the first step toward becoming a paramedic. Applications for training course are being accepted now. The day session meets on Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Jan. 13, 2020; and the evening session meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. beginning Jan. 14, 2020.

Students will learn how to assess and manage patients with medical and traumatic emergencies before taking them to the hospital. Taught by seasoned paramedics, registered nurses and other critical care experts, the course covers delivering babies; emergency medical treatment for victims of heart attack, stroke, seizure, motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds and falls.

The course consists of 130 hours of classroom work, 36 hours of clinical rotations in the medical center's emergency department and labor and delivery room, and 36 hours of ambulance training.

The cost of the course is $1,300, which covers books, lab fees, TB testing, background check, I.D., uniform shirt for clinical rotations and the AHA Healthcare Provider CPR course.

Advocate Christ Medical Center's EMT course is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services, and accredited through the Illinois Community College Board. Students will be enrolled as Moraine Valley Community College students and will receive college credits. A registration form is available through Region VII EMS.
