Advocate Christ Offers Free Exercise Series For Stroke Survivors
Stroke survivors are invited to participate in a 5-week exercise series starting May 6 at Advocate Christ. Registration required.

OAK LAWN, IL – The Advocate Brain and Spine Institute Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn is holding a free five-week exercise series for people who have suffered a stroke. Classes will be held on consecutive Mondays starting May 6 through June 10 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Patients will meet in the Outpatient Pavilion lobby on the ground floor and be escorted to the inpatient therapy gym. The five-week series schedule includes:
May 6 - Initial Screenings to assess current level of functionality (special meeting time: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
May 13 - lower extremity focus
May 20 - Upper extremity focus
June 6 - (Thursday) - Balance
June 10 - Endurance/wrap-up session
Licensed physical and occupational therapists will lead the exercise classes, provide activity handouts and answer participants’ questions. The goal of this series is to help patients return to their best possible levels of mobility, function and independence.

Participants must be able to safely walk household distances and have some use of their shoulder, elbow and hand. If determined during the initial screenings the patient is not at the appropriate level for the exercise group, the patient will be referred to their doctor for a formal therapy prescription.
