Carrying on Adam’s Legacy: The 2026 Annual Backpack Drive in Memory of Adam Carrillo

Thirteen years ago, a beautiful tradition began—one created out of love, remembrance, and a desire to give back. Caroline and Lou Carrillo are once again kicking off their annual backpack drive in memory of their beloved son, Adam Carrillo, whose life continues to inspire generosity and kindness throughout the community.

Adam passed away on November 4, 2011, after suffering a stroke in 2010. Throughout his life, Adam faced many challenges with incredible strength and resilience. He was diagnosed with Lowe Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, in 2001, and after his stroke, he was re-diagnosed with Cockayne Syndrome in 2010.

Although Adam’s journey was far too short, his impact continues to live on. Each year, Caroline and Lou honor Adam’s birthday by giving back to the school community that played such an important role in his life. Adam would have turned 32 on August 31, and this year marks the 13th Annual Backpack Drive in his memory.

The donations collected through this drive benefit the Developmental Learning Program (DLP) of the Eisenhower Cooperative at Spaulding School in Midlothian, the school Adam proudly graduated from in 2008. This program provides support, education, and opportunities for children with physical and developmental disabilities and continues to be a place close to the Carrillo family’s hearts.

Over the years, so many family members, friends, and community members have joined Caroline and Lou in honoring Adam by helping provide essential school supplies for students and classrooms. If you have supported the backpack drive in the past, the Carrillos thank you for your continued generosity. If this is your first-year learning about Adam’s story, they welcome you to become part of this meaningful tradition.

The 2026 Backpack Drive is collecting donations of backpacks and school supplies, including:

Adaptive backpacks
Notebooks
Crayons
Washable markers
Glue sticks
Folders
Pencils
Pencil boxes
Scissors
Kleenex
Wipes
Paper towels
Classroom supplies and other items that may help students throughout the school year

Caroline has created wish lists through Walmart and Amazon titled “2026 Backpack Drive in Memory of Adam” to make donating easy. However, donors are welcome to purchase items from anywhere they choose. Please remember to include your name so the Carrillos can personally thank you for your generosity.

For those who prefer another way to contribute, donations can also be made through checks, gift cards, Zelle, or Venmo. Caroline would be happy to do the shopping on your behalf. Through relationships with supportive stores and community partners, she is often able to stretch donations further while also helping reduce shipping costs.
