National Night Out Brings Community Together in a New Way in Oak Lawn
National Night Out is an annual event held in communities across the United States to promote police-community partnerships and strengthen neighborhood camaraderie. Held on the first Tuesday in August each year, this nationwide event encourages residents to connect with local law enforcement, first responders, and community organizations while enjoying an evening of family-friendly fun.
On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the Oak Lawn Police Department and Oak Lawn Fire Department once again hosted a memorable National Night Out, but this year featured an exciting new layout. Instead of being held in the Police and Fire Department parking lot as in previous years, the event expanded to the Oak Lawn Public Library and Village Parkway area. The new location created a welcoming festival atmosphere with more space for activities, demonstrations, vendors, and families to enjoy.
Community organizations and local businesses lined the parkway, offering information, activities, and treats for attendees. Participating vendors included Oak Lawn Library, Paisans Pizzeria, Nothing Bundt Cakes, a snow cone stand, McDonald's, Target, Advocate Health Care, Pathways, the Lions Club of Oak Lawn, Oak Lawn 911 Communications, the Oak Lawn Police Department, the Oak Lawn Fire Department, the September 11 Traveling Beams, Boy Scout Troop 618, and Boy Scout Troop 549. The variety of booths gave residents the opportunity to learn about local services while supporting organizations that help make Oak Lawn a strong community.
Children had no shortage of entertainment throughout the evening. Face painting, balloon character creations, oversized dart games, giant checkers, and the nearby playground kept kids smiling from start to finish. One of the biggest attractions was the Oak Lawn Fire Department's famous fire pole, where children experienced the excitement of sliding down just like firefighters.
The Oak Lawn Police Department also showcased several crowd favorites. Officer Pappas proudly displayed his specially prepared police race car, which he will be racing at Grundy County Speedway on August 15. The unique vehicle attracted racing fans and curious visitors alike, providing another opportunity for officers to interact with residents in a fun and memorable way.
Technology demonstrations also drew large crowds as officers conducted live police drone demonstrations, giving attendees a firsthand look at how drones assist officers in protecting the community. Visitors also explored the Illinois SWAT Mobile vehicle, climbed aboard Oak Lawn fire trucks, examined police vehicles up close, tried on police and swat gear and learned more about the equipment used by first responders every day.
Favorite characters also made special appearances throughout the evening. Children were excited to meet Bluey and Bingo from Blue's Clues, while Paw Patrol: Chase and Marshall greeted young fans with hugs, high-fives, and plenty of photo opportunities.
One of the evening's most popular attractions was the dunk tank, where residents lined up for the chance to test their aim and dunk an Oak Lawn police officer or firefighter into the water. The friendly competition drew plenty of laughter from participants and spectators alike, creating memorable moments while giving the community a fun and lighthearted way to interact with the first responders who serve them every day.
Adding to the festive atmosphere was local musician Gincy, whose energetic performance filled the parkway with music. Families danced, sang along, and enjoyed the lively entertainment as the evening unfolded.
National Night Out continues to be much more than a community event. It provides an opportunity for residents to meet the officers, firefighters, dispatchers, and volunteers who serve Oak Lawn every day. Events like these help build trust, encourage conversations, and strengthen the partnerships that keep neighborhoods safe.
The new location proved to be a tremendous success, offering more room for activities and creating a vibrant community gathering that families of all ages could enjoy. From meeting first responders and exploring emergency vehicles to enjoying delicious food, games, music, and favorite characters, there was truly something for everyone.
Thank you to all of the residents who came out to support this wonderful evening. A special thank you goes to the Oak Lawn Police Department, Oak Lawn Fire Department, Oak Lawn Public Library, community organizations, volunteers, sponsors, and vendors who made National Night Out 2026 another outstanding success. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
