Man Found Lying In Fetal Position On Grass Found To Be Carrying Stolen Gun: Police

The Hickory Hills man was found to be carrying a stolen gun during a welfare check, Chicago Ridge police said.

Damian Borkowski, 26 (Chicago Ridge Police Department )

CHICAGO RIDGE, IL—A Chicago Ridge police officer conducting a welfare check early Friday morning on a man found lying on the grass was found to be armed with a gun, police said.

Just before 7:30 a.m., the officer was called to check out a person lying in the grass by a business near Harlem Avenue and 102nd Street. The officer said he observed a man, later identified as 26-year-old Damian Borkowski, of Hickory Hills, sleeping in a fetal position in the grass.

The cop asked Borkowski if he was okay. When Borkowski woke up rolled over, police said the officer observed a gun in the man's waistband. The officer confiscated the gun until the officer could determine if Borkowski had a valid CCL and FOID, a police news release said.

Borkowski reportedly did not have a valid conceal-carry license in Illinois. In fact, police said the gun had been reported as stolen out of another jurisdiction.

The Hickory Hills man was also found to be a convicted felon, police said. Borkowski was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Police did not specify his previous felony convictions.

Borkowski is due for a detention hearing Saturday at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building at 26th and California.
