Burbank Woman Accused of Beating Grandfather With Metal Rod

Prosecutor said 85-year-old man suffered fractures, including a possible broken vertebrae.

BURBANK, IL -- A Burbank was arrested after she beat her 85-year-old grandfather with a metal rod, prosecutors said. Jamie Martin, 39, appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on a felony charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm of a person over 60. She is currently on conditional discharge for driving under the influence.

According to the charges, Martin snuck into her grandparents’ house in the 100 block of Pinehurst Court in Burbank around 10 a.m. Dec. 11. Martin allegedly began punching her grandfather and destroying things in his bedroom. She went into another bedroom and came back with a metal rod, and began beating him with it, the prosecutor said. When her grandfather tried to escape, Martin reportedly slammed him against a wall. The elderly man was able to run out of the house where he flagged down a police car.

The prosecutor said the elderly man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was treated for a broken arm and wrist, and a possible fracture to his vertebrae. Martin occasionally stays at her grandparents’ house.

The assistant public defender told the judge that Martin is a former hostess in a gaming store. She said that Martin denied climbing through the window of her grandparents’ home.

“As you can see, she has a black eye and numerous other injuries,” the assistant public defender said, requesting a court order to photograph Martin’s supposed injuries.

“She can’t go back to that house,” Felice said. “Remarkable, beating up an 85-year-old man with a metal rod.”

Bail was set at $150,000. Martin was ordered not to contact her grandparents while her case is pending. Martin’s next court date is Jan. 9 in Bridgeview.
