CHICAGO RIDGE, IL — A son accused of stabbing his father to death told Chicago Ridge police that he was defending his mother, prosecutors said. Francisco Duran, 21, appeared Wednesday before Cook County Judge Donald Havis on a second-degree murder charge in the death of his father, 46-year-old Salvador Duran.

Duran lived with his parents in the 6500 block of West 106th Place in Chicago Ridge. The prosecutor said Duran was at home when his parents returned Sunday evening from celebrating Mother’s Day with other family members.

Later that evening, the older Duran and his wife got into an argument about seeing other people. Salvador ordered his wife to leave the house, the prosecutor said.

According to the charges, the wife hid her husband's car keys because he was too intoxicated to drive. The argument turned physical, as Salvador attempted to push her out of the way as he made his way through the house to the kitchen, the prosecutor said.

Salvador Duran began throwing things, the prosecutor said, including hurling a full beer, which hit his wife in the head. The prosecutor said the wife suffered a cut to her forehead that required four stitches.

After she was hit by the full beer can, she went to the kitchen because she was bleeding. The prosecutor said Francisco Duran came downstairs carrying a knife, proceeded directly to his father and began stabbing him. As Duran walked away from his father, he apologized to his mother, the prosecutor said.

A profusely bleeding Salvador went into the living room to call 911, but collapsed. Eventually, the wife called 911 reporting that her son had stabbed her husband.

Before he was arrested, the prosecutor said Duran sent a Facebook message to a friend, which stated: “Sorry, I won’t be able to go to the movies with you tomorrow. I just stabbed my dad.”

The prosecutor said Duran also sent a text message to his boss, saying he wouldn’t be at work Wednesday because “I just stabbed my dad.”

Chicago Ridge police and paramedics arrived at the home around 12:44 a.m., where Salvador Duran was pronounced deceased at the scene. As Francisco Duran was being escorted from the home, he allegedly told police, “I'm sorry I did this, but he kept hitting my mom. The knife is in the bathroom.”

Duran is said to have made more admissions at the Chicago Ridge police station after being read his Miranda rights.

Cook County Sheriff evidence technicians recovered a Ka-Bar knife with a 16-inch blade inside the residence. The prosecutor said there were six beer cans on the floor, as if they had been thrown.

A blood trail also corresponded with Salvador Duran being stabbed in the kitchen, then walking toward the living room before collapsing, the prosecutor said.

An autopsy performed at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office showed Salvador Duran receiving 11 knife wounds. The medical examiner said the cause of death was multiple stab wounds and ruled the manner of death homicide.

The assistant public defender told the judge this is Duran’s first arrest. He’s worked the past two years as a car wash attendant.

Bail was set at $250,000. Duran’s next court date is June 7 in Bridgeview.
