Convicted Felon Accused Of Stealing Cash From Elderly Woman

OAK LAWN, IL — A Mount Greenwood man who is listed in state records as a registered sex offender is accused of stealing cash and jewelry while in a dating relationship with an elderly Oak Lawn woman. Thomas Felton, 53, who also spells his last name “Felten,” was charged with felony theft. The relationship has since been terminated.

Police said the woman came to the Oak Lawn police station on May 9 to file a theft report. The woman told police that Felton came to her residence in January to fix the furnace. Felton and the woman developed a friendship that evolved into a dating relationship.

During their relationship, Felton stole $3,400 in cash, $300 in silver coins and a gold bracelet and necklace worth $5,000 from inside the woman’s home, according to the police report. The woman also reported that she was missing a set of house keys. She was advised to change her locks.

The matter was referred to Oak Lawn’s detective division, and Felton was taken into custody on June 20. Felton was released on an I-bond and his next court date is Aug. 11 in Bridgeview.

Felton, whose last known address is the 11100 block of South Trumbull Ave. in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood, was previously convicted on two counts or attempted murder, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and home invasion in March 1997. Felton was sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was released in 2017 when his sentence terminated. Felton is listed in the Illinois Sex Offender Registry as being non-compliant with requirements to maintain accurate records. Chicago police suspended sex offender registrations on March 19 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
