Elderly Resident Assaulted In Oak Lawn Home Invasion

Male offender broke through front door of elderly resident's home, assaulting her and stealing property early Thursday morning, cops say.

Oak Lawn police are trying to figure out if an elderly resident was targeted in a home invasion that happened early Thursday morning.

The village issued an Everbridge alert asking residents to check on elderly family members and neighbors after a male entered a home in the 9000 block of 51st Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, where he robbed and assaulted an 86-year-old woman..

Prior to the man entering the resident’s home, police said she heard a loud noise at the door. When she went to investigate, she noticed that there was damage to the front door.

A short time later, the elderly resident heard another loud noise and the home invader entered the home.

Police said the 86-year-old resident was physically assaulted and several items were stolen from the home. After the man fled the scene, the resident was unable to contact police for more than an hour after the incident.

The woman is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police are investigating the incident to see if the 86-year-old resident was specifically targeted.

Seniors who live alone are advised to contact family members to aid them in taking proper precautions for their security.

  • Residents are advised to keep phones near their bed to assist in contact first responders when needed.
  • Use deadbolts on doors and motion sensor lighting whenever possible to deter offenders.
  • Residents who observe suspicious individuals or vehicles around their home or neighbor’s home, should call 911 immediately.

Oak Lawn police are asking anyone with information about this incident or witnessed suspicious activity or vehicles in the area to call detectives at 708-422-8292.
