Fire Pit Believed Cause of Oak Lawn Garage Fire

OAK LAWN, IL -- Sticks being burned in a fire pit are believed to have sparked a garage fire Tuesday afternoon in Oak Lawn, fire officials said.

The Oak Lawn Fire and Rescue Department responded to a garage fire in the 8700 block of McVicker around 2:55 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy flames showing from the front of a single story, two-car garage. Fire crews were able to deploy a hose line and contain the fire to the garage without flames touching nearby structures.

Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets said the fire is believed to have been caused by a resident burning sticks in a fire pit. A neighbor told Patch that her block smells awful.
