Grassano's Will Re-Open Wednesday Two Days After Fire

Grateful restaurant owner thanks Oak Lawn Fire Department and ComEd for saving his business.

OAK LAWN, IL -- It takes more than a fire to halt Grassano’s giant pizza puff production. Less than two days after a fire ravaged the roof of the popular Oak Lawn pizzeria, Grassano’s will reopen on Wednesday.

High winds snapped power lines that sparked a fire of the building’s roofing system early Tuesday morning. Oak Lawn firefighters could not spray water on the flames until electrical power had been cut off to the lines.

After receiving an “estimated time of arrival unknown” message from ComEd emergency crews, a passing ComEd truck riding by on 87th Street saw the urgency of the situation and cut off the power lines. Oak Lawn firefighters put the the fire out in quick order.

If not for the chance timing, OLFD Assistant Chief Scott Boman said the building’s roof may have caved in.

Damage to the inside and outside the restaurant was minimal. Owner Gino Grassano reopened the restaurant at 5651 W. 87th St. in November after pouring thousands into its renovation.

Gino announced that the restaurant would be open for business on Wednesday. Gino praised the care and professionalism of the Oak Lawn Fire Department in helping him navigate the aftermath of the fire.

If it has been awhile since you’ve visited Grassano’s, show this Oak Lawn restaurant some love by stopping by and ordering a pizza puff. We hope Tommy Plant’s amazing artwork made it through the fire.
