  • This 749-bed teaching hospital is one of the busiest level 1 trauma centers in the state, according to Becker. U.S. News & World Report named it the No. 4 hospital in the state for 2017-2018 and Healthgrades recently listed it among the 50 best hospitals in America.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital (Chicago)

  • Home to more than 1,400 doctors, Lurie cared for more children than any other pediatric health care system in Illinois last year. U.S. News & World Report ranked it the No. 7 children's hospital in the country for 2017-18 and it was one of nine children's hospitals nationwide to earn designation as a Top Children's Hospital for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago)

  • Formed by the consolidation of two of Chicago's oldest hospitals in 1972, Northwestern Memorial is the primary teaching affiliate for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. It was dubbed the best hospital in Illinois and the No. 13 best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Becker says the hospitals that made the list have received national recognition for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes and staff and doctor satisfaction. The list is in alphabetical order and are not to be taken as rankings.

“These institutions are industry leaders that have achieved advanced accreditation and certification in several specialties,” the group said on its website. “The list also includes industry innovators that have sparked trends in healthcare technology, hospital management and patient satisfaction.”

Becker’s Healthcare has a portfolio that includes trade publications, such as the magazine Becker's Hospital Review.

The hospital list is based on the group’s analysis of ranking and awards agencies, including the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, letter grades from The Leapfrog Group and Truven Health Analytics.

Becker's also sought nominations for the list.
