Guns Found During Pat Down In Traffic Stop: Police

The two Chicago men told police they needed guns for protection because they live in a violent neighborhood, reports said.

OAK LAWN, IL — Two Chicago men who were passengers in a car that was pulled over for speeding were arrested after officers found guns during a pat down, reports said. Clayton Davis, 20, and Taylor Shaw, 23, were both charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. The driver was ticketed for speeding.

On July 26, Oak Lawn police pulled over a Chevy Impala that was clocked going 58moph in a 35-mph zone near 103rd Street and Cicero Avenue. Police said the driver told police that he and his passengers, including Shaw and Davis, were coming home a party. While speaking with the driver, officers said they detected a strong odor of marijuana from inside the vehicle.

Davis, who was sitting in the front seat, was seen shielding something in his lap, the report said. Officers said they checked police databases and learned the driver arrested in December 2019 by Chicago police for unlawful use of a weapon. Officers asked the group if there was any weed in the car. According to the officers, the driver said they had smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

Other backup units arrived at the scene. Police asked Davis to step out of the car. During a pat down, the officer said he noticed the barrel of a black, semi-automatic 9mm Taurus handgun poking out of his pocket. Davis was handcuffed and taken into custody, the report said.

Next Shaw was asked to step out of the car. Police patted down Shaw who said they felt a hard object in his groin area. When officers attempted to place Shaw into custody, the report said he tried to run and was assisted to the ground. According to the report, officers removed a gun from his pants.

The driver was issued citations for speeding and no proof of insurance, and a village citation for possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis. The other passengers were free to leave.

Both men were taken to the Oak Lawn police station. Shaw told police that the gun was his mom’s, and he carries it for protection because he lives in a bad area of Chicago, the report said. He apologized to police said it was a “stupid mistake” and “did not want to cause any trouble.”

According to the report, Davis said he also carried a gun for protection because he lived in a violent area of the city. Davis said he found the gun and that it was a stupid mistake, and “owns up to having a gun on him.

Both were charged with one felony count each of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Shaw and Davis appeared in bond court on July 27.
