Intense Heat And Humidity Linger: Where To Find Cooling Centers In Oak Lawn And Hometown

OAK LAWN-HOMETOWN, IL—Intense heat and humidity are expected to linger Wednesday, as the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect from noon to 9 p.m.

The weather service said hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, with heat index values of 100 to 110 expected.

If your power goes out, your air conditioner breaks, you don’t have air, or you just want to give your electric bill a break, here are cooling centers where you can escape the heat in the Oak Lawn and Hometown communities.

• Oak Lawn Public Library, 95th & Raymond Ave. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Oak View Center, 4625 W. 110th St., 5:30 to 9 p.m.
• Oak Lawn Community Pavilion, 9401 S. Oak Park Ave, 3 to 10 p.m.
• Oak Lawn Ice Arena, 9320 S. Kenton Ave, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night, will lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

The Cook County Department of Homeland Security also has a list of cooling centers for suburban Cook County and the City of Chicago, which may open on a 24/7 basis if needed.

Residents are advised to call ahead to make sure the cooling center is open.
